Summary of Edmodo: Edmodo is a free, private blogging site to for students and teachers. It is a great site for students because of the fact that it is private, and makes it safe for students. Teachers and students can share notes, links, files, and teachers can also send alerts, events, and assignments to their students. To set up a free account you can go to https://www.edmodo.com/.
Pros and Cons of Edmodo: One pro of Edmodo is that it is free. Another big pro is that the site can be private and only be seen by users that you authorize to see it. Edmodo is easy to use and can help teachers and students stay very organized. The fact that you can color coordinate different students or classes and send assignments, notes, and messages to one or all classes at once is a great benefit of Edmodo. There is a calendar feature in Edmodo, which can be very helpful for students who may struggle with organization and keeping track of when assignments are due. The teacher can send reminders to the students too.
How Edmodo can be used in the classroom: Edmodo can be used for thousands of things in the classroom. For starters you can use Edmodo to teach your students about blogging and sharing opinion or experiences online. You can also use Edmodo as a way to get students to communicate online with classmates or even have them collaborate on projects through the blogging site. Teachers can make groups on Edmodo so that each one of their classes has a different group and the teacher can keep track, view, and grade students on their participation through the site. TEachers and students can leave comments, share same of different experiences with their peers and even give suggestions. Edmodo can be used as a calendar, grade book, place to post assignments, and place to post quizzes. There is so much potential for Edmodo and the ways it can be used in the classroom. One of the cons of Edmodo is that there is a public instant messaging option, and my opinion that could be very distractive for students when they are supposed to be working on assignments and they keep getting messages popping up. Another con is that when parents are on Edmodo and viewing what their children are dong they can't see the same thing as the teacher and students. They are very limited as to what they can see and that kind of defeats the purpose of having them go on the site to see what their children are doing in class.
